What Is Wing Chun Kung Fu?

Wing Chun Kung Fu is a traditional Chinese martial art with around 350 years of history. It has been gaining in popularity in film and television, especially in the last decade. But its introduction to the world began back in the 70’s thanks to Bruce Lee’s popular Kung Fu movies.

More recently, Donnie Yen’s Ip Man series of films have reignited curiosity toward this enigmatic martial art system.

There have also been a few non martial arts themed Hollywood blockbuster action films, whose main characters used Wing Chun as their main fighting system. Films such as Sherlock Holmes (2009) and xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017). Even Alita can be seen practicing some Wing Chun in Alita: Battle Angel (2019).

While debates about Traditional Martial Arts Vs Mixed Martial Arts are still being had, the use of Wing Chun techniques in MMA competitions at the highest levels is becoming more and more common.

Without getting into whether or not some MMA fighters could be better role models outside the cage, fighters such as Lyoto Machida, Max Holloway, and Conor McGregor, just to name a few, consistently use Wing Chun techniques as part of their repertoire of techniques inside the cage.

With a simple YouTube search, you will quickly find that other popular fighters such as Brian Ortega, Anderson Silva and Tony Ferguson have also integrated Wing Chun Kung Fu into their MMA training.

The fact that these successful fighters and others like them have integrated Wing Chun into their training, in some form or another, remains largely unknown to both traditional and modern martial artists alike.

There is a divide among martial artists today: between those who choose to practice martial arts primarily as a path leading to personal growth and spiritual development, and those who are more concerned with combat effectiveness.

I believe that both reasons are equally important. And that when used well, Wing Chun is a system where traditional ideas and modern concepts can harmonize and coexist to create something everyone can find meaningful and enjoyable.

His father, Sifu Ma Ping, was a 2nd generation student of Ip Man's lineage, and was also the first Sifu to introduce Wing Chun Kung Fu to Montreal back in 1978.

  1. Wing Chun Siu Lim Tao - 詠春小念頭 - Beaver Lake, Montreal
